Godparents for First Communion Class

Godparent for First Communion Class

It is the custom in many Hispanic countries to have godparents (padrinos) for a First Communion. Many parishes will ask the godparents for a First Communion to take a preparation class in order to serve in this role.

The following is quoted from the Pastoral Directory on the Sacraments of Christian Initiation on First Communion which was published by the Archdiocese of Mexico:

  • It is not mandatory to have sponsor (godparent) for First Communion. If you want to keep the tradition of having sponsor, we suggest to parents, and other relatives, the sponsor would be the one from Baptism or Confirmation.
  • Sponsors must take into account their catechetical preparation to support, accompany, and motivate their godchildren to participate with them in the reception of the Eucharist.

CatechismClass.com has put together a short, convenient, online course that is meant to prepare godparents of a First Holy Communion for this honor and responsibility in light of the requirements mentioned above.

CatechismClass.com is pleased to have the support of the hierarchy of the Catholic Church and offers its programs in full conformity with the Magisterium of the Church.
