What Do Catholics Really Believe? Understanding Catholic Faith

What do Catholics really believe? This question echoes throughout history. The Catholic Church, founded by Christ Himself, safeguards the fullness of truth through Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the Magisterium (the teaching authority of the Church). To truly understand what it means to be Catholic, you must understand what we believe, how we live, and how we pass on the same Faith first taught by Christ to the Apostles.

To be a Catholic, you must be baptized into the Church and profess agreement with all of the Church's essential teachings. The Church teaches 255 infallible dogmas that form the foundation of our Faith. These are not opinions or suggestions — they are the unchanging teachings of Christ preserved through 2,000 years of Church history.

What Do Catholics Believe About Core Doctrine?

Catholics are often asked specific questions about what we believe. Here are answers to some of the most common doctrinal questions:

  1. What do Catholics believe about salvation? Catholics believe that salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ and membership in His Church. We believe in the redemptive power of Christ's sacrifice on the Cross and in living a moral life in accordance with God's commandments and the teachings of the Church.
  2. What do Catholics believe about Mary? Catholics honor Mary as the Mother of God (Theotokos) and as the greatest saint. We believe in her Immaculate Conception (she was conceived without sin), her virginity, and her Assumption into Heaven. We ask for her intercession, but we worship God alone.
  3. What do Catholics believe about the Saints? Catholics believe that the Saints, those who have lived holy lives and are now in Heaven, can intercede for us before God. Honoring and seeking the intercession of Saints is part of Catholic Tradition rooted in Scripture.
  4. What do Catholics believe about the Pope? The Pope is the successor of St. Peter and the Head of the Church on Earth. Catholics believe in papal primacy — that the Pope has supreme authority in the Church and that the Holy Ghost protects the Pope from error when teaching on matters of faith and morals (papal infallibility).
  5. What do Catholics believe about Purgatory? Purgatory is a state of purification after death for those who die in God's grace but are not yet fully purified. Catholics believe in praying for the souls in Purgatory to help them reach Heaven.
  6. What do Catholics believe about the Sacraments? Catholics believe in seven Sacraments: Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist (Holy Communion), Penance (Confession), Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Matrimony. These are sacred rituals through which Christ's grace flows to us.
  7. What do Catholics believe about the Eucharist (Holy Communion)? Catholics believe in transubstantiation — that when the priest consecrates bread and wine at Mass, they become the actual Body and Blood of Christ. We receive Jesus Christ Himself in Holy Communion.
  8. What do Catholics believe about Confession? Catholics believe that Christ gave the Apostles the power to forgive sins (John 20:22-23). We confess our sins to a priest in the Sacrament of Penance to receive God's forgiveness and grace to overcome sin.

What Does "Catholic" Mean?

The word "Catholic" literally means "universal." The Catholic Church is the universal faith established by Christ and intended for all people of every nation, culture, and time. The Church is described in Scripture as the flock of Christ, the House of God, and the Spouse of Christ—the totality of all baptized Catholics in communion with Christ's established religion.

In Scripture, Christ commissioned His disciples: "Going therefore, teach ye all nations; baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost" (Matt. 28:19-20). The Catholic faith is for everyone, everywhere, at all times.

How Should Catholics Live Their Lives?

Being a Catholic is not just about what you believe—it's about how you live. A true Catholic life requires both interior faith and exterior practice:

Catholics must also: Never support abortion, embryonic stem cell research, homosexual marriage, human cloning, euthanasia, or artificial contraception. These violate the sanctity of life and God's design for marriage and sexuality.

Is It Better to Be a "Good" Protestant Than a "Bad" Catholic?

A common misconception is that one can be saved without the true Faith. St. Peter Julian Eymard, a saint of the nineteenth century, addressed this directly:

"Sometimes people say 'It is better to be a good Protestant than a bad Catholic.' That is not true. That would mean at bottom that one could be saved without the true Faith. No, a bad Catholic remains a child of the family—although a prodigal; and however great a sinner he may be, he still has the right to mercy. Through his faith, a bad Catholic is nearer to God than a Protestant is, for he is a member of the household, whereas the Protestant is not."

This profound truth reminds us that the fullness of salvation comes through the Catholic Church. Being Catholic is necessary for salvation. However, being nominally Catholic—in name only, without truly believing and practicing the Faith—is not enough. We must be practical Catholics who truly understand, believe, and live what the Church teaches.
